Two weeks at Camp WeHaKee means mornings in Hunter Lake, afternoons on the trail or at the climbing wall, and evenings around a fire. Your daughter’s going to need gear that can handle all those adventures, plus a bag that isn’t so huge she can’t find her favorite socks! Here’s exactly what to bring, what to skip, and a few things people usually forget.
Clothing
If you've opted for laundry service, pack about five or six pairs of shorts, three pairs of jeans or long pants, and eight to ten t-shirts or tanks. You’ll also want to bring eight or more pairs of underwear and socks. It’s always a good idea to pack extra socks and underwear because you really don’t want to run out. Bring five pairs of pajamas and a long sleeve shirt for those cool Northwoods mornings when it can dip into the low 60s. You should also pack two sweatshirts, a hoodie or light jacket, and a reliable raincoat or poncho. For the water, bring two swimsuits, either a one piece or a well fitting two piece.
Footwear
Your daughter will need two pairs of athletic shoes, some sandals or flip flops, and a pair of water shoes. If she’s planning on horseback riding, she’ll need boots or shoes with a heel. She won't need a riding helmet - we've got plenty.
Bedding and Towels
You’ll need a set of twin sheets, a sleeping bag, one warm blanket, a pillow, and two pillowcases. Pack two bath towels, two large beach towels, and two washcloths. Our cabins have ceiling fans and great ventilation, but northern Wisconsin nights can get genuinely cold, so definitely bring that extra blanket just in case.
Toiletries
Pack the basics like soap, shampoo, a comb or brush, and your toothbrush and toothpaste in a handy toiletry bag. You’ll also need sunscreen and bug repellant. Don’t forget a flashlight too, for the short walks to the showerhouse at night.
Extras Worth Packing
A camera is a fun addition, and disposable ones are perfect for camp life. Bring along books, writing materials, and some stamps with pre addressed envelopes to make sending letters home a breeze. Stuffed animals are definitely welcome for all ages! A small day pack is helpful for daily activities, and feel free to pack fun costumes for our special events. Games or playing cards are also great for relaxing in the cabin.
What to Leave at Home
Cell phones, tablets, iPads, and gaming devices aren't permitted at any point and we’ll hold them in the office for safekeeping if they arrive. iPods are okay for the bus ride and limited use at camp.
It's best to leave snacks at home. Don't worry, she won't go hungry! Our Trading Post has free snacks every afternoon during Valley Time, and we serve dessert at lunch and dinner. If you want to send a care package, fill it with books, games, photos, or cabin party favors instead.
Label Everything
Please put a name on every single item, including clothing, towels, water bottles, and shoes. Iron on labels or laundry markers both work perfectly. If something doesn't have a name, there’s a good chance it’ll end up in the lost and found, and those items are donated away 48 hours after checkout.
